I think it satisfies a VERY different set of requirements. The community building is very different. How you can control who sees your posts is very different....
Back in the Jurassic, I went with LJ because I liked the way the commenting feature worked more than the others; I wanted to be able to have a dialogue with anyone who wanted one. The community building aspect is different than the others, not necessarily better so much as more cohesive, I think.
