Having just watched Bobby Flay's "Taste of Ireland" (or something like that) on the Food Channel, I can say there was definitely soda bread. The two things I remember them talking about were how baking soda (no mention of "bread soda") enabled almost everyone to make bread and the X-cross cut into the top of the bread.

The Americanized version of Irish soda bread is miles better than the corned beef & cabbage that is foisted upon us every St. Patrick's Day. Ptui! I say. Give me a lamb stew. (Or even beef, if it has Guiness in it.)
