This summer, when I first started using Gmail, I changed almost all of my email discussions lists to my gmail address. However, in the past few days I have changed them back, because I had stopped reading the discussion lists since the interface was too slow. I use Thunderbird under Linux as my email client, and it is much faster to press the "n" key for the next post than it is to click the newer link and wait for the conversation to load.
I set up mail forwarding on my account (a service provided by my Internet provider) and use this to forward my mail to my gmail address. This way, I still get the storage and retrieval benefits of gmail, while being able to read my email rapidly.

On another topic, Jack was telling me how you were getting really deep into Linux, something I had noticed from any number of your posts. I've been toying for a while with the idea of leasing one of those rack-mounted linux boxes that various companies are offering, so I could possibly sell websites on my own host. However, I'm kind of cheap. But I think two or three folks going in on one of those could make out pretty well. I'm currently spending around $50 a month for cable modem internet, and another $50 or so for 100Mb of disk with email, which is hosting three domains. Would cheerfully transfer everything if I could get storage in Gigabytes for $50-75 a month as a share. Bandwidth is usually pretty generous on these deals, as well.
Do you have any interest in looking into such a deal?

Yes, gmail allows you to send yourself large attachments. In fact, some people have figured out a way to mount their gmail directory as a linux filesystem. This boggles my mind.
I just signed up for another year at my host, but if the price was right I might be interested in "owning" part of a rack mounted linux box. Lunarpages provides a lot of good stuff, but I would really like to be able to ssh to my website (which LP doesn't allow) and to have a little more flexibility in Mysql databases, and number of email lists (mailman).
We should probably take this to email: I can most easily be reached at the userid elainen at my stardel.com account.
