This is pretty recent second growth forest. To judge from what I have seen the past few years, they do try to keep the regional parks thinned out, since the Black Forest is a disaster waiting to happen of diseased Pondera pines and understory that is so thick in so many places that you can't get throught it.

Really gorgeous--more subtle than a lot of the fall scenes, but I think that makes it more rewarding to look at.
