Despite being on the voter rolls for three decades, I've only received two jury summons in my life. The first, sent to me by the state of Maryland, arrived for a date that was after my move to Texas. The second, sent by El Paso County a few weeks ago, was for today. I called the indicated number and found that I am on standby for today, and have to call again at 11:30. This seems to be the worst of the choices, because I am also in the process of moving my mother into the condominium my sister and I are buying her. Her stuff was delivered (from southern California) by the moving company yesterday, and I was hoping to get the rest of the boxes unpacked today.

Anyone who has ever moved a senior knows that it is worse than moving a cat. It is worse than moving a whole herd of cats.

Oh dear. What a pileup. My grandma cried continuously when we were trying to move her, even though she wanted the move. She couldn't sort anything.

We did very little sorting and culling when we packed her in SoCal, partly because my mother was so opposed to the move that she kept saying she didn't want to keep anything. As we unpack, we have set up boxes for a yard sale, but less is going in them that I expected.

Oh jeez, a lot of this is so familiar, only I escaped having to be there by being 1/3 across the country, a better excuse even than jury duty. I heard a lot about it, you betcha.

Sympathies! This too shall pass.

I have these noble plans of divesting my belongings slowly and appropriately as I no longer use them, but I'm not sure I'd lay bets on it happening. Especially since the one thing about not having children (except furkids) is I have no idea whom I'd leave things to.

Doesn't it all happen at once? Jury duty and helping your mom move- on the same day! I remember when we moved my (now) late grandmother out of her apartment and into assisted living. Challenging indeed. Good luck to you and your sister.

Oh lord! I hope you don't get called for duty. On the other hand, it's got to be more restful listening to a murder trial than trying to move grandma.
