I brought Hap home today. A young woman had a half lease on him through the summer, and that expired yesterday.

Hap managed to invest the event with his usual sense of drama. As soon as I unloaded him from the trailer, he became fascinated with the structure that had been erected in the field across the road since he left in June. I barely attracted his attention long enough to drag him through the gate and into the new field. Damn, I hate it when a twelve hundred pound creature ignores me. Then, it took me a few seconds to persuade him to lower his head enough for me to get the halter off. He galloped across the field as soon as he was free to see Rags and Smoke who were still in the old field.

They all seemed calm after a few minutes of getting reacquainted across the fence and I let Rags and Smoke into the new field. All three horses settled to grazing almost immediately, after a little posturing and sniffing. And later, I was happy to find out, all three horses remembered the routine I use to feed when Hap is home. Smoke seemed more resigned than worried about losing his stall to Hap. (I have to separate the horses for meals, since they get an inverse amount of food compared to their place in the herd hierarchy.)
