My mother’s cat Smoky is staying with us. She is an elderly dilute tabby Manx. In an attempt to keep her from laying on my laptop as I use it, I made a bed for her in a crate on my work table. She seems to think this is an acceptable compromise.

While Rion and Lightning have been sharing dog beds for a while now, this was the first time I ever saw them touching while they did so.

At 70F with no humidity I thought it was a lovely day for a walk. Rion, with his tarnished silver coat, didn’t agree: “it’s okay, Mom. I’ll wait here until sunset.”  (We have new (to us) phones!  With cameras! And Bluetooth!)

I try to remember to call them Rudbeckia, but since I grew up in Maryland, I think I will always think of them as Black Eyed Susans (the state flower of Maryland.)

Most of the giraffes were hanging out in the shade, but this one wanted to socialize, or at least get some treats. (CMZ sells packets of treats so one can hand feed the giraffes.)

This tree walk was new since the last time I visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

It was a very hot day when I visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and these grizzly bears were having a blast playing in their pool.

Reflections on the glass made it difficult to get a clear shot of this tiger.

I doubt even my friend Dianne will think these are cute.  I found two eggs in a precarious spot in my hay barn on July 6.  I figured magpies would take the eggs so I didn’t disturb them.  The eggs hatched two weeks later.  I’ve had to get Jack to help me to pull down hay bales so the bales don’t roll onto the chicks.  This photo was taken when the chicks were a week old, and they are even bigger and uglier six days later.  I still can’t believe a predator hasn’t found them.  I figure they will be fledged in another two weeks and after that I am destroying any eggs that find.

I was sad to see that my favorite Dr Who glass with the magically appearing Tardis was broken in the dishwasher this morning.  (I am 54.  Why do you ask?)

Fortunately, the shards match the gaps so I didn’t have to worry about glass lost in the bottom of the dishwasher.  The Martha Stewart craft tweezers came  in very handy for removing the slivers.

On our last morning in the park, we stayed in the foothills area and walked down to the river several different places.  The river was still high with snow melt in June.

Bear safes, to discourage bears from breaking into cars to get the goodies, were ubiquitous in the park.

And so were these grim little warnings to stay out of the water:
